Bharatanatyam is a form of dance that comes from Tamil Nadu, a state in South India. It is the oldest classical dance form in India. It is the beautiful, graceful, and fast-paced art of Nritta (rhythmic movements with a fast beat), Nritya, (hand gestures along with a dance to tell a story), and Natya, (dramatic storytelling where the dancer is often acting like a certain character).
Triaksha Acharya is a seventh grader at Herbert Hoover Middle School. She is a 13-year-old who loves her family, friends, and hobbies. Along with dancing, she really enjoys singing, playing instruments, and theatre. Triaksha is also an avid reader. She plays the piano, guitar, and flute in her school band. The outdoor activities that she enjoys are ice skating and skiing. Ever since she started Bharatanatyam classes with Smt. Deepa Natarajan at age seven, she fell in love with it and is now thrilled to share her passion with her family and friends at her Arangetram!
Triaksha started her dance journey at the age of seven in July 2018 with Smt. Deepa Natarajan, who she fondly calls “Ms. Deepa.” Within just a couple months since she joined, she did her first performance on Nandakumara Krishna at the Shirdi Saibaba Temple in Germantown. As time went by, her passion for Bharatanatyam only grew as she performed and participated at various events and venues. Under the tutelage of her Bharatanatyam guru, Smt. Deepa Natarajan, she honed her dancing skills. Triaksha performed at the Murugan Temple, ISKCON Temple, and on several occasions at the Sai Baba Temple and SSVT Temple. She’s also competed for classical dance in the Kerala Association of Greater Washington (KAGW) solo and group competitions. She performed at the World Malyali Council, the Howard County Diwali Festival, Walter Johnson High School, and for the Nritya Geethanjali Annual festival at Arts Barn in Gaithersburg. When COVID hit, and Triaksha couldn’t go to dance classes in person, she enthusiastically continued learning and expanding her knowledge of dance through ZOOM classes online. In 2023, Triaksha did a Bharatanatyam performance for a talent show conducted in her school, Beverly Farms ES, as a fifth grader. In the past several months Triaksha has been meticulously preparing for her Arangetram. She has truly come a long way as a dancer!
